Summit County plans new services building with sheriff's office and community spaces

The Summit County Council convened on March 3, 2023, to discuss several key developments regarding local infrastructure and community services. The meeting primarily focused on the remodeling of the Richins Building and the subdivision of the Florence Gilmore property.

The council outlined plans for the Richins Building to be transformed into a library space, with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) relocating to accommodate additional meeting spaces. Following the approval of a bond for this project, the council began collaborating with GSBS to subdivide the 125 developable acres purchased in February 2017 along the US 40 corridor.

The subdivision resulted in seven lots, with notable sales including one to High Valley Transit for a new operations facility and another to Mountain Regional Water for their headquarters. Additionally, a lot was reserved for a new county facility, referred to as the Silver Summit County Services Building. This facility aims to address the needs of the sheriff's office and the county attorney's office.

The proposed design for the new building includes dedicated spaces for sheriff's administration, patrol, and a fitness facility for tactical training. It will also house the county attorney's criminal division, victim advocates, and paralegal workstations. While some spaces remain unallocated, there is potential for additional functions related to the health department and emergency management.

A significant feature of the new facility is a high-tech convention space designed for community events, complete with breakout meeting rooms and advanced audio-visual capabilities for council meetings. This space aims to alleviate the need for external venues, such as Ecker Hill Middle School, for large public hearings.

Furthermore, the design incorporates a shell space for a future childcare center to support employee recruitment and retention, as well as expansion space to accommodate future growth within the county. The council emphasized the project's alignment with the county's sustainability goals, including the use of native trees and drought-resistant plantings.
