Police report surge in youth violence amid 85 recent calls for service

Chief of Police reported that officers responded to 85 calls for service over the past two weeks, noting a concerning rise in violent incidents. A recent altercation at Martin's involving young men using tire arms marked a troubling escalation in violence, which the Chief attributes to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the increase in violent calls is alarming, he also mentioned a decrease in firearms being carried, presenting a mixed picture of community safety.

In addition to public safety concerns, the meeting addressed upcoming community events. Residents are reminded that the Little League parade is scheduled for April 9, which may cause traffic disruptions. Following that, the Tiger Trot, a 5K run, will take place on April 23, also expected to impact local traffic patterns.

The town attorney provided updates on the Board of Zoning Appeals and the ongoing comprehensive rezoning efforts, emphasizing the importance of aligning with the town's master plan. He will be available for questions during an upcoming hearing, encouraging citizen participation.

Lastly, the town engineer reported that authorization has been received from the Maryland Department for the final payout of a grant related to the Chester Water line project, which includes a withheld amount of $25,000.
