Summit County launches community health assessment survey to gather local health data

The Summit County Council of Governments convened on May 21, 2024, to discuss critical community health initiatives, including the launch of a new community health assessment (CHA). The meeting began with a pledge of allegiance led by Mayor McCormick and an invocation by Mayor Morris, emphasizing gratitude for community service and the importance of making informed decisions for the county's welfare.

Nancy, a representative from the health department, presented the CHA, which is conducted every five years. The assessment aims to evaluate community health data and programs, ensuring they meet the needs of residents effectively. The last assessment was completed in 2019, and the current one was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The CHA will not only serve the health department but also provide valuable insights for various community partners.

The assessment process involves collecting both primary data through surveys and focus groups, and secondary data from existing sources like census information. The health department aims to gather responses from approximately 1,000 residents, with a specific goal of including 400 Latino respondents to ensure diverse representation. The survey will cover topics such as healthcare access, climate change, and community health services, with results shared periodically on the department's website.

To promote participation, the health department plans a grassroots campaign, utilizing community events and social media to encourage residents to complete the survey. Flyers and paper questionnaires will be available in both English and Spanish to reach a broader audience. The survey is expected to remain open until November, with a final report due in December.

Council members expressed support for the initiative, highlighting the importance of community engagement and the need for effective communication strategies to reach various demographics, including seniors. The meeting concluded with a commitment to assist in spreading the word about the survey and its significance for improving community health outcomes.
