Summit County festival serves over 2400 residents and expands educational screenings

The Summit County Council meeting on May 1, 2024, focused on the impact and future plans of the local film festival and related community programming. The council discussed the festival's success in serving approximately 2,437 residents, highlighting a request for increased funding due to an 11% rise in festival costs.

During the festival, the council reported providing four free in-person screenings and one online screening, totaling 287 free tickets distributed to Summit County locals. The event engaged around 31 local organizations and attracted an audience of over 11,303 attendees, including student screenings. Notably, 1,407 students from Park City High School and Treasure Mountain Junior High School participated in the festival's educational initiatives, which included filmmakers visiting classrooms.

Looking ahead, the council outlined plans for summer programming under the initiative called "Local Lens," which has already seen five well-attended screenings. Additionally, the council is preparing for a short program during the upcoming Latino Arts Festival, which previously drew 844 attendees. For 2024, the council aims to offer a free week of screenings, contingent on funding, with plans for at least two filmmakers to attend.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue enhancing community engagement through film and arts programming, including participation in the Sundance Festival in 2025. The council's focus remains on expanding access to cultural events and fostering local talent in the arts.
