Rising Sun seeks water sewer extensions amid failing septic systems crisis

The Town of Rising Sun held a meeting on February 14, 2023, where officials discussed pressing issues regarding water and sewer services in the area. Officials reported receiving five requests for these extensions, highlighting that residents are becoming increasingly aware of the inadequacies of their septic systems. Many residents have reported difficulties with their wells, with some having to drill multiple times due to poor water quality. The county health department has expressed a desire to connect failing septic systems to public sewer, but the lack of nearby public sewer infrastructure complicates this process.

To address these issues, a grant application was submitted to the Maryland Department of the Environment to potentially fund the extension of water and sewer services. This initiative aims to alleviate the problems associated with failing wells and septic systems, which have been a long-standing concern for the community.

Additionally, officials reflected on past decisions regarding water sourcing, noting that the town's reliance on Chester Water Authority has been beneficial. Concerns were raised about the long-term viability of well systems, especially given the high estimated costs of establishing new wells outside the existing watershed, which could range from $24 million to $38 million.

The meeting underscored the town's commitment to addressing water quality issues and improving infrastructure to support residents' needs. As inquiries about water and sewer extensions continue to rise, town officials are actively seeking solutions to ensure the health and safety of the community.
