Middletown officials face community backlash over traffic plans near Amazon facility

Residents of Middletown Township expressed significant concerns regarding ongoing traffic changes and infrastructure projects during the Board of Supervisors meeting on February 6, 2023. The discussions highlighted the potential impact of increased traffic flow due to new developments, particularly the anticipated influx of vehicles from an Amazon facility.

Kevin Belmont, a local resident, raised alarms about the projected 42,000 additional vehicles expected daily in the area, emphasizing that the proposed changes to access roads could force more traffic onto already congested routes. He criticized the lack of neighborhood access and the planned installation of roundabouts, arguing that these measures would exacerbate traffic issues rather than alleviate them.

Other residents echoed Belmont's concerns, particularly regarding safety at critical intersections. Paul Shanahan, who lives near the Bellevue Avenue exit of US 1 North, warned that current traffic patterns pose a danger to pedestrians and drivers alike, especially if speed limits are not enforced. He described the situation as a "death sentence" for those trying to navigate the area safely.

Anne Schafer, a long-time resident, highlighted the impact of traffic changes on school bus routes, expressing worry that closing access roads would lead to increased speeding and unsafe conditions for children waiting for buses. She called for better communication from local authorities about the ongoing changes and their implications for the community.

Bernadette Hart and Pat Mervine also voiced their frustrations, urging the Board to advocate for residents with PennDOT regarding the construction plans. They emphasized the need for community input and the importance of maintaining access roads as vital routes for local traffic.
