Town considers speed camera ordinance after safety concerns near schools

Residents of Rising Sun will soon see improvements in public safety as the town council discussed the implementation of new speed camera technology during their recent meeting on March 26, 2024. The initiative aims to address speeding concerns, particularly around local schools, where studies have indicated a significant problem.

The council heard from a representative of a technology firm specializing in speed enforcement solutions. The company emphasized that they would cover all installation costs, ensuring that the municipality would not incur any upfront expenses. This arrangement allows the town to focus on enhancing safety without financial burdens, as the company only profits when the system effectively reduces speeding violations.

Concerns were raised regarding the revenue generated from similar systems in other jurisdictions, particularly in relation to the school bus camera program, which reportedly fell short of expectations.
