Summit County Health Department advances health equity initiatives and community resilience projects

Health equity took center stage at the Summit County Council of Governments meeting on June 20, 2023, as Natalie McHale, the health equity coordinator for the Summit County Health Department, presented key initiatives aimed at improving community health outcomes. McHale emphasized a striking statistic: up to 60% of health is determined by one's zip code rather than genetics, highlighting the importance of addressing social determinants of health.

The Summit County Health Department is committed to integrating health equity into its core values and programs. McHale explained that this approach ensures that all community members have access to health resources, regardless of their individual circumstances. She illustrated the difference between equality and equity, using visual examples to show how tailored solutions can better serve diverse community needs.

A significant focus of the meeting was on resilience and community support. McHale detailed various projects funded through health equity grants, totaling over $53,000, aimed at enhancing mental health services, food security, and educational opportunities for underserved populations. Notable initiatives included scholarships for mental health counseling, healthy food provisions for school readiness programs, and sports equipment for youth.

Additionally, the department is enhancing its outreach efforts by providing translation services and establishing a resource connector to identify and address community needs.
