Calistoga City Hall reconfigures offices for improved accessibility and efficiency

The Calistoga City Council convened on January 16, 2024, to discuss significant improvements to City Hall aimed at enhancing accessibility and operational efficiency. The proposed reconfiguration of the office space is designed to accommodate new staff positions and modernize the facility's infrastructure.

City Manager Cynthia Battenberg presented an overview of the project, highlighting the need for updates due to the building's age, dating back to 1902. The plan includes relocating the city manager's and city clerk's offices downstairs, while moving the finance department upstairs. This reorganization will involve minor construction and the purchase of new office furniture and IT upgrades, with a total project cost of approximately $276,307, which is under budget.

A key aspect of the project is the commitment to accessibility improvements, which will allocate 20% of the construction budget to ensure compliance with building codes. Enhancements will include reconfigured parking spaces, improved sidewalks, and modifications to the entrance to facilitate easier access for individuals with disabilities. These changes aim to create a more welcoming environment for all residents.

In addition to physical changes, the project will also address long-overdue IT upgrades, including a transition to Microsoft Teams for phone services, which is expected to save the city over $4,000 annually. The council discussed the challenges of space management, acknowledging that while the reconfiguration will improve efficiency, it may lead to a more crowded work environment.

The meeting underscored the city's ongoing efforts to adapt its facilities to better serve the community, with a focus on both accessibility and operational effectiveness. As the project moves forward, the council remains committed to addressing the evolving needs of Calistoga's residents.
