Calistoga Planning Commission approves tentative map with tree preservation conditions

A significant decision regarding the future of a new development project took center stage at the Calistoga Planning Commission meeting on April 24, 2024. The commission unanimously approved the tentative map and design review for a project at 33 Brannon Street, with several key conditions aimed at preserving local greenery and enhancing community aesthetics.

Commissioner Vaughn led the motion, emphasizing the importance of investigating the preservation of three existing trees on the site. If preservation proves impossible, the project will require the replacement of these trees at a three-to-one ratio, resulting in the addition of nine new trees instead of the proposed four. Furthermore, the commission mandated that the new street trees be larger, specified as 24-inch box trees rather than the smaller 15-gallon varieties.

Another critical condition involves assessing the need for ADA parking. If it is determined that ADA parking is not required, the civil plan will be adjusted to remove it, allowing for an additional parking space. The commission also called for collaboration between the landscape architect and city staff to incorporate softscaping between the building and the parking area, ensuring proper drainage.

In a poignant moment, the meeting also marked the farewell of a long-serving commissioner who announced their resignation due to a new career that could present conflicts of interest. The commissioner expressed gratitude for their nearly four and a half years of service, highlighting the valuable experiences gained and the hope of continuing to contribute to the community in other ways.
