State Board of Education recognizes Maryland's four US presidential scholars

The Maryland State Board of Education convened on May 21, 2024, to address key educational initiatives and celebrate student achievements. In the absence of President Crawford, who was on vacation, the meeting commenced with a pledge of allegiance and a confirmation of quorum.

A highlight of the meeting was the recognition of four Maryland students named as U.S. Presidential Scholars. This prestigious honor was awarded to Angelina Zhu and Maximilian Belyantsev from Richard Montgomery High School, Mingni Dong from Delaney High School, and Minelle Kwaja from Wicomico High School. The selection process, which involved over 5,700 candidates, emphasizes academic excellence, artistic talent, and technical education, showcasing the high caliber of students in Maryland.

In addition to celebrating student success, the board discussed ongoing collaborations with the Accountability and Improvement Branch (AIB). This partnership aims to enhance educational policies and practices across the state, with a joint policy expected to be presented during the meeting.

The board also reminded the public that all meetings are recorded and accessible via live stream, ensuring transparency and community engagement. Public comments were welcomed both in-person and virtually, allowing residents to voice their opinions and concerns.
