Maryland State Board begins superintendent search with thorough community engagement process

The Maryland State Board of Education is making significant strides in the search for a new state superintendent, with a focus on community engagement and a thorough vetting process. During a meeting held on January 23, 2024, board members received an update from HYA, the consulting firm leading the search, represented by Dr. Monica Brown and Dr. Jack Smith.

The board emphasized its commitment to a comprehensive and swift process aimed at attracting a strong pool of candidates for the superintendent position, which will guide Maryland's educational landscape from 2024 to 2028. Dr. Smith highlighted the importance of community input, noting that over 200 stakeholders participated in 20 focus groups, alongside 353 survey responses—an increase from 229 in 2021. This engagement is designed to ensure that the candidate profile reflects the voices and needs of Marylanders.

The search process is structured in four phases: engage, recruit, select, and transition. Currently, the board is in the recruitment phase, having already completed the engagement phase. The job posting is live, and the team is collecting resumes. Dr. Brown and Dr. Smith outlined the characteristics desired in the new superintendent, including strong communication skills, a commitment to equity, and the ability to navigate complex educational environments.

Challenges identified during the discussions include concerns about the affordability and implementation of the state's educational blueprint, as well as the need for rebuilding trust among various stakeholders. The board is determined to find a candidate who can address these challenges while fostering collaboration across Maryland's 24 school systems.
