Maryland's expert advisory shapes new high-quality curriculum framework

The Education Transformation & Accountability Committee meeting held on April 11, 2024, focused on the development of a new educational framework aimed at enhancing curriculum quality across Maryland schools. Kate Christ, a social studies educator with 15 years of experience, serves as the social studies adviser. Jody from BSCS represents the science advisory, while Joanna Yip from the English Learner Success Forum focuses on multilingual learners. Additionally, Jennifer Alexander, the deputy commissioner overseeing special populations in Texas, advises on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) concepts.

The committee emphasized that the framework serves as a foundational document outlining essential elements for curricular products to be deemed high quality in Maryland. Key components include alignment with standards and grade levels, a focus on building knowledge, and specific supports for multilingual learners, who represent the fastest-growing subgroup in elementary schools.
