Maryland introduces sliding scale childcare payment system for preschool families

To facilitate this process, the Maryland State Department of Education has developed an online calculator for local education agencies (LEAs) and private providers. This tool will assist in calculating family contributions based on household size and income, ensuring that families are not penalized for income fluctuations after enrollment. The calculator will also account for special circumstances, such as children with disabilities or those experiencing homelessness, which may affect tier assignments.

The meeting also addressed administrative procedures for income verification during enrollment. LEAs and private providers are encouraged to utilize a standardized agreement template for payment arrangements, which can be tailored to family preferences for weekly or monthly payments. Additionally, LEAs have the option to cover the family share costs for tier 2 students using local funds, further alleviating financial burdens for families.
