Doctor Green highlights equity initiative for Black boys in Montgomery County

A significant focus on educational equity for Black boys emerged during the Maryland State Board of Education meeting on January 24, 2023. Board member Green highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Achieving Academic Equity and Excellence for Black Boys initiative, which is making strides in 14 schools across eight districts.

Led by Dr. Daryl Howard from Montgomery County Schools, the initiative aims to address the educational disparities faced by boys, particularly in language arts. Green emphasized the alarming statistics: only 38% of boys are meeting standards in English language arts compared to 51% of girls, with graduation rates showing a similar trend—74% for boys versus 81% for girls.

To further this mission, the group is hosting a speaker series this Thursday, featuring a PhD who will discuss learning differences between boys and girls. The event, open to all teachers and board members, aims to share insights that could benefit students statewide, not just those in the targeted schools.

This initiative underscores the board's commitment to improving educational outcomes for all students, particularly those who are at risk of falling behind. As the program continues to develop, it seeks to create a more equitable learning environment for Black boys in Maryland.
