MCPS implements Science of Reading and Grow Your Own teacher programs

The Maryland State Board of Education convened on January 24, 2023, to discuss significant initiatives aimed at enhancing literacy education and teacher recruitment within the Maryland public school system. The meeting highlighted two primary focus areas: the Science of Reading and the "Grow Your Own" program.

The session commenced with acknowledgments of key contributors, including Judy Aberback, a grant specialist from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) for their support in addressing educational challenges. The board reviewed various assessment tools being utilized, such as the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) and MAP Reading assessments, which help monitor student progress and inform instructional strategies. The data indicated that MCPS students are outperforming national averages in early literacy assessments.

Professional development for educators was also a key topic, with over 4,000 elementary teachers participating in summer training focused on structured literacy. The board discussed the ongoing "Shift to Structured Literacy Professional Development Series," designed to provide continuous support for teachers throughout the school year.

The second major focus of the meeting was the "Grow Your Own" initiative, aimed at developing a pipeline of future educators from within the community. This program seeks to engage high school students and support staff interested in transitioning to teaching roles. The board highlighted partnerships with local colleges and universities to facilitate this process, including scholarships for students committed to returning to MCPS as teachers.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue expanding these initiatives, ensuring that the educational workforce reflects the diversity of the student body and meets the evolving needs of Maryland's schools.
