Maryland reforms teacher evaluation and licensure process for military spouses

The Maryland State Board of Education convened on January 24, 2023, to discuss several key topics related to teacher preparation and licensure. The meeting focused on the implementation of new regulations aimed at enhancing reading instruction and addressing the challenges faced by military spouses in obtaining teaching licenses.

The board discussed the integration of the edTPA and PPAT assessments as part of a comprehensive battery of evaluations. The board acknowledged the unique challenges faced by these individuals, who often move frequently due to military assignments. The MSDE has implemented a system to expedite licensure applications for military applicants, ensuring they are prioritized in the application process. However, the board noted that while military spouses can be hired conditionally, they still need to meet standard licensure requirements, including passing the edTPA.
