Worcester educators emphasize safety as priority for student learning

The Educator Virtual Roundtable held on January 25, 2023, by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) focused on the critical importance of social and emotional safety in schools. Educators from various counties shared their insights on how a secure environment is essential for effective learning.

During the meeting, a teacher emphasized that students must feel socially and emotionally ready to learn. She noted that without a sense of safety and support, learning cannot take place. This sentiment was echoed by other educators, who highlighted the need for students to feel cared for and comfortable in their learning environments, whether virtual or in-person. One teacher shared her experience during the pandemic, noting that students who struggled to log on were often in unstable home situations, which hindered their ability to engage in learning.

Another participant, an art teacher, brought attention to the Maslow hierarchy of needs, stressing that emotional and physical safety should be the top priority in schools. She pointed out that recent events, such as school shootings, have made safety a pressing concern for both students and staff. The arts were also highlighted as a vital component in encouraging student attendance and participation, as they can ignite passion and interest in school.

A second-grade teacher from the Virtual Academy reinforced the idea that without safety, no learning can occur. She stated that safety must always come first to ensure a productive and enjoyable school experience.

The discussions at the roundtable underscored a collective understanding among educators that prioritizing safety—both emotional and physical—is fundamental to fostering an environment where students can thrive academically and personally. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to addressing these needs as a foundation for effective education.
