Eureka City Council approves Harris Medical Center project for urgent care and housing

The Eureka City Council meeting on December 3, 2024, focused on the proposed Harris Medical Center project, which aims to transform a vacant church site into a mixed-use development that includes medical facilities and residential units.

Deputy Director Castellano presented the project, located at 272 Harris Street, which seeks to change the land use designation from low-density residential to neighborhood commercial. This change is necessary to allow for the development of an urgent care facility, a rural health clinic, a medical spa, and residential units. The project plans to convert the existing church building into medical offices and construct 8 to 10 new dwelling units in two residential structures, along with approximately 1,600 square feet of commercial space for a café.

The council discussed the project's potential benefits, including increased access to healthcare and additional housing in the area. The planning commission had previously reviewed the project and unanimously recommended its approval, noting that the development aligns with community needs.

Public comments during the meeting expressed support for the project, highlighting its potential to create a vibrant neighborhood by combining residential, commercial, and healthcare spaces. The architect involved in the project emphasized the importance of integrating various housing types and green spaces into the design.

Following the discussions, the council voted unanimously to approve the necessary land use and zoning amendments, paving the way for the Harris Medical Center project to move forward. The next steps include a second city council meeting where the ordinance for the zoning reclassification will be formally adopted. This development is seen as a significant step towards enhancing community services and addressing local housing needs.
