Humboldt County updates ordinance for food waste business inspections

Eureka City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing food waste management by approving an ordinance update during their meeting on November 5, 2024. The new regulations will require certain businesses that generate food waste to undergo annual inspections by the Humboldt County Division of Environmental Health. This initiative aims to ensure compliance with updated solid waste management practices, particularly for businesses classified as tier 1 and tier 2.

The ordinance update is part of a broader effort to align with new state requirements for the collection of trash, recycling, and organic waste. As part of this process, businesses will need to register with the county, pay an annual fee, and submit to inspections to verify adherence to the new standards. Approximately 33 businesses in the area will be affected by these changes.

Project manager Prakker highlighted the extensive outreach efforts already underway to inform local businesses about the new requirements. The county and incorporated cities have partnered with Upbound Food Care, a specialist in food recovery, to educate businesses on food donation programs and compliance expectations. This proactive approach aims to minimize waste and promote food donation, as most businesses prefer to donate rather than discard edible food.

The council's unanimous vote to adopt the ordinance reflects a commitment to improving environmental health and sustainability in the community. Moving forward, the council plans to continue educational outreach to ensure businesses are well-prepared for the new regulations, reserving penalties for only the most egregious violations. This initiative marks a significant advancement in Eureka's efforts to manage food waste responsibly and effectively.
