High School Launches Best Buddies Program to Foster Inclusion and Friendship

The Best Buddies organization is making waves at Tea Area High School, as educators and students unite to foster inclusivity and friendship among peers. During a recent Board of Education meeting, Abby Gellickson and Bridal Donlin, both English teachers and club advisors, shared their enthusiasm for the program's launch this year.

The duo, alongside student leaders, attended a training session in Sioux Falls, where they learned strategies to create a welcoming environment for all students. "Our mission is making friends with everyone and having a great time together," Gellickson stated, emphasizing the club's guiding principle: "The more we give, the more we receive."

With no fees to join, Best Buddies has already attracted 40 students who meet monthly to plan events and strengthen their connections. President Ava Ophlin and Treasurer Avery Petrick highlighted the club's focus on friendship, leadership, and job opportunities, stating, "Our main goal is to create new friendships that we can share with our community."

The club has already hosted three successful events, including a match party, a holiday celebration with games and treats donated by Dairy Queen, and a basketball game where buddies enjoyed free snacks and met players at halftime. "It's been great here," said Ophlin, reflecting on the positive experiences shared among members.

As the program continues to grow, the Best Buddies organization is set to play a vital role in promoting understanding and camaraderie within the school community, paving the way for a more inclusive future.
