Lava Ridge plans rebranding to align with Snow Canyon High School identity

The Washington County School District held a working session on December 9, 2024, where significant discussions centered around the rebranding of Lava Ridge Intermediate School. The proposal aims to align the school’s identity with its neighboring institutions, Snow Canyon Middle School and Snow Canyon High School, while preserving its unique history.

Principal Lana Williams and Assistant Principal Greg Bozarth presented the rebranding initiative, which includes changing the school colors to match the blue and gold of Snow Canyon High School and adopting the mascot "Gila Warriors." This change seeks to strengthen the connection between the schools and foster a sense of community among students as they transition through their educational journey.

The current mascot, the Gila monster, has historical significance, as it was designated the state reptile of Utah through student advocacy. The rebranding process has involved gathering input from teachers, students, and community members, with the majority favoring the name "Lava Ridge Intermediate Gila Warriors." However, there was also a notable preference for "Snow Canyon Intermediate Warriors" among students, indicating a desire for a stronger connection to the high school.

The rebranding effort is projected to cost approximately $3,500, primarily for internal updates, with no immediate expenses for signage. The school administration emphasized the importance of maintaining tradition while adapting to the evolving educational landscape. They believe that this rebranding will not only enhance school spirit but also create a cohesive identity that resonates with the community.
