Commissioners approve water main upgrades in Lewisburg for improved access

Mason County officials are taking significant steps to enhance the reliability of the local water supply system. During the recent Fiscal Court meeting on May 14, 2024, discussions centered on critical upgrades to the water mains serving the area, particularly those running from Lewisburg to Maysville.

The meeting highlighted the existing infrastructure, which includes two separate water mains connected to different tank systems. One main, a 12-inch line, runs from the Double A tank towards Flemingsburg, while another 6-inch line comes from the Maple Leaf system. These lines have faced challenges over the years, including a major washout incident that led to the capping of a line on Marshall Station Road.

Recent issues with water supply, particularly affecting the Maize Lick area, prompted officials to devise a plan to improve service reliability. The team successfully reconnected a previously capped line, allowing for better distribution of water to customers. This strategic move aims to ensure that if a break occurs in the 12-inch main, water can still be redirected to affected areas, maintaining service for residents.

Plans are now in place to install two additional valves at the tie-in point of the 12-inch main. This upgrade will provide redundancy, allowing for more flexible responses to potential line breaks. With approximately 90% of breaks occurring between Mount Gilead and Maysville, these enhancements are expected to significantly improve water service continuity for local residents.
