Spotsylvania County board rejects 40-home development near Lake Anna amid community concerns

Concerns over proposed residential development near Lake Anna dominated the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors meeting on May 28, 2024. Residents voiced strong opposition to a plan that would change zoning to allow for the construction of up to 40 new homes, arguing it would negatively impact the area’s rural character and exacerbate existing traffic and safety issues.

David Loving, president of the Rolling Woods Homeowners Association, highlighted the dangers of increased traffic on Days Bridge Road, which he described as already hazardous. “We need to stop development in this part of the lake and deal with the problem,” he urged, emphasizing the unanimous rejection of the proposal by the planning board. Residents expressed fears that the development would harm the lake’s ecosystem, particularly in light of ongoing issues with harmful algae blooms.

In response, the developer’s representative acknowledged community concerns and outlined extensive proffers aimed at protecting water quality and enhancing monitoring efforts. However, skepticism remained among board members and residents regarding the adequacy of these measures. Supervisor Lane noted the importance of public safety, citing past delays in emergency response times in the area.

The board ultimately decided to postpone a vote on the proposal until July, allowing more time for community feedback. Supervisor Jake emphasized the need to represent constituents' wishes, stating, “The overwhelming feedback has not been positive for this project.” The decision reflects a growing awareness of the delicate balance between development and environmental stewardship in Spotsylvania County.
