Police Department approves $61K for new weapons and optics upgrades

Middletown's Board of Supervisors made significant strides in enhancing public safety and operational efficiency during their recent meeting on March 11, 2024. A key highlight was the unanimous approval of a three-year agreement with Law Enforcement Accreditation Services (LEAS) to streamline the police department's accreditation process. This initiative, costing $41,000, will be funded by reallocating existing training budget resources, ensuring no additional financial burden on taxpayers. Chief of Police emphasized that achieving premier status by December 2026 would not only reduce liability risks but also foster improved community relations and employee confidence.

In a related move, the board also authorized the purchase of upgraded duty weapons for the police department, transitioning from .40 caliber to 9mm handguns equipped with pistol-mounted optics. This change, driven by advancements in ammunition technology and the need for better accuracy under stress, aims to enhance officer safety and reduce the risk of collateral damage during incidents. The total cost for this upgrade is approximately $61,938, which falls within the budgeted capital plan.

The meeting also addressed the acquisition of new public works vehicles, including a 2024 F600 dump truck and an F350 pickup truck, both funded through RDA resources. Additionally, a new transmission service machine was approved to maintain the township's fleet, ensuring efficient operations for years to come.
