County Council approves naming Stevens Road after Reverend Keith Decker

In a recent Whitley County Fiscal Court meeting held on August 15, 2023, significant steps were taken to honor a beloved community leader and address local road management issues.

One of the most impactful discussions centered around a petition to rename Stevens Road to Reverend Keith Decker Loop. Reverend Decker, who recently passed away, was a prominent pastor in the area, known for his long-standing service at Black Oak Baptist Church and his contributions to the community. The court received a petition signed by church deacons advocating for the name change, which reflects the deep respect and admiration held for Decker. The motion to accept the petition was unanimously approved, marking the first reading of this change.

Additionally, the court addressed the closure of two county roads. The first was a petition to close the last 350 feet of Richard Mack Road, which had been extended incorrectly in the past. This adjustment aims to align the road's mapping with the actual property boundaries, ensuring clarity for local residents. The motion to close this section was also passed without opposition.

The second road closure discussed was Carson Payne Road, located in the southern part of the county. Many residents believed this road had been closed for years, but it still appeared on official maps. With property owners in agreement, the court moved to officially close this road, further streamlining local infrastructure.

In addition to these discussions, the court approved employee pay rates as presented, ensuring that local government staff are compensated fairly for their work.

While Sheriff Bill Elliott was unable to attend the meeting, the court continued with its agenda, demonstrating a commitment to addressing community needs and maintaining effective governance.
