Carmen Ana González has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Department of Family, a role that comes with significant responsibilities, particularly in addressing homelessness and domestic violence in Puerto Rico. During a recent government meeting, González outlined the Department's initiatives aimed at stabilizing housing for vulnerable populations and enhancing support services.
The Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program, which González oversees, is designed to assist individuals and families facing homelessness. This federal program allocates funds to states and municipalities to prevent homelessness, provide emergency shelter, and offer related services. The Department of Family is tasked with ensuring that these funds are effectively utilized by community-based organizations and municipalities.
González highlighted that the Department received approximately $27 million in federal funds under the CARES Act to combat homelessness exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. These funds will be distributed in two phases, with the first phase allocating around $12 million to 26 organizations for emergency shelter expansion and other eligible activities. A robust outreach campaign will accompany this funding to ensure that those in need are aware of the available resources.
In response to recent tragedies related to domestic violence, González emphasized the importance of prevention and education. The Department is actively working on programs that integrate family education and support, particularly through early childhood initiatives. She acknowledged the need for collaboration with the Department of Education to develop curricula aimed at eradicating gender-based violence.
As González prepares to take on her new role, she expressed her commitment to improving the welfare of families and vulnerable groups in Puerto Rico. Her extensive experience in the field positions her to lead transformative efforts within the Department of Family, focusing on effective strategies to address pressing social issues. The Senate will now evaluate her qualifications and plans as she seeks their approval for this critical position.
