Junction City High School Cross Country team earns historic victories and state honors

In a vibrant gathering at the Geary County Schools Board of Education meeting on December 2, 2024, the community came together to celebrate remarkable achievements among students and educators. The atmosphere buzzed with pride as attendees recognized individuals who exemplified the core values of respect, responsibility, and positive relationships.

The evening began with heartfelt acknowledgments from board members, including a special mention of Ms. Ulrich, who was absent due to a family commitment. Her spirit was felt as the board expressed gratitude for the dedication of staff and students alike. Principal Waite of Ware Elementary School took the stage to honor Peyton Mantonano, a student who has consistently demonstrated kindness and responsibility. Peyton's commitment to her classmates and her positive attitude earned her the prestigious 3 R award, highlighting her as a role model within the school community.

The celebration continued with the recognition of three schools—Morse Hill, Sikes Elementary, and Ware Elementary—who received the Kansas Purple Star designation for their exceptional support of military-connected students and families. This accolade underscores the schools' commitment to inclusivity and understanding of the unique challenges faced by these families.

A particularly emotional moment came when Coach Tim Testa and the Junction City High School Cross Country team were celebrated for their historic season. Freshman Linden Pickler made history by becoming the first girl from the school to win a state championship, while the boys' team achieved a remarkable runner-up finish, the best in nearly two decades. Finally, the USD 475 communications department was acknowledged for their excellence in storytelling, receiving four state awards from the Kansas School Public Relations Association.
