Morrow County partners with Umatilla for $25M regional conservation grant

Morrow County's Board of Commissioners meeting on December 4, 2024, highlighted significant developments in local agricultural and energy management. Corey Sweeney, the county's Lead Program Manager, delivered a quarterly report that underscored ongoing collaborations and future initiatives aimed at enhancing resource management.

Sweeney reported a successful conclusion to the thistle grant program, which was finalized in September, and emphasized the importance of teamwork among various stakeholders in addressing energy facility concerns. He noted that the county is shifting its focus towards a regional partnership for a substantial grant opportunity, potentially worth up to $25 million, involving Umatilla, Wallowa, and Union Counties. This pivot comes as Morrow County's department reassesses its capacity to lead the initiative, now placing Umatilla County at the forefront.

In addition to grant discussions, Sweeney mentioned ongoing meetings with the Oregon Department of Agriculture to clarify roles in managing energy projects and noxious weed plans. This restructuring aims to streamline responsibilities and ensure compliance with environmental standards as new energy facilities are developed in the area.

Looking ahead, Sweeney announced plans for a future full-time employee (FTE) position to bolster the department's capabilities, alongside efforts to hire a licensed applicator for roadside spraying, addressing the increasing demands of county contracts.

The meeting underscored Morrow County's proactive approach to resource management and collaboration, setting the stage for future developments in agricultural and energy sectors.
