Westmoreland County Habitat for Humanity builds home for grandmother and grandchildren

Habitat for Humanity is making a significant impact in Westmoreland County by building a new home for a grandmother and her two grandchildren who lost everything in a devastating fire. The Southmoreland High School Interact Club is stepping up to help, volunteering on March 1 and 2 to support this vital community project.

In addition to this heartwarming initiative, Southmoreland students are actively engaging in various educational and fun activities. Ninth and tenth graders have partnered with the Scottsdale Library to secure library cards for their research projects, enhancing their academic resources.

The school community celebrated creativity and talent recently, with freshmen Olivia Welling, Cali Boyce, and Liam Smith performing at the PMEA District 1 East Junior High band concert. The high school’s musical theater also hosted a lively "Mamma Mia Family Fun Day," featuring an inflatable obstacle course, reptile encounters, and visits from Disney princesses.

Student council activities are in full swing, with a successful Valentine's Day cupcake sale that sold over 200 treats. Upcoming events include the annual bump it up volleyball tournament on March 27, benefiting Make-A-Wish, and the second annual powder puff event on April 27 at Southmoreland Stadium.

The Southmoreland Reading Team is gearing up for competition at Seton Hill University on March 5, with over 20 students preparing to read 60 books. Meanwhile, the Counseling Office is launching a Career Cafe Series, connecting students with community professionals in various fields, including healthcare and law.

As the school year progresses, counselors are actively meeting with students to finalize their plans for the 2024-2025 academic year, receiving positive feedback on new course offerings. The Southmoreland School District continues to foster a supportive and engaging environment for its students and the community.
