City Board approves new retaining wall design on Iowa and Federal Streets

A new retaining wall project is set to transform the landscape along Iowa and Federal Streets in Davenport, as the Davenport City Design Review Board approved plans for its construction during a recent meeting. The proposed wall will be built in front of an existing limestone structure, enhancing both aesthetics and structural integrity.

The design features ready rod concrete blocks, which are known for their durability and ability to mimic historic limestone. This modern material was previously used in a successful project within the Hamburg Historic District, showcasing its compatibility with the area's architectural style. The new wall will stand approximately 8 feet tall and will be landscaped with ornamental grasses to improve visual appeal.

City staff emphasized the importance of proper drainage and structural support in the design, which will include backfilling with dirt. The project aims to maintain the existing utility poles and ornamental iron fencing along Iowa Street, ensuring that the area remains functional while enhancing its beauty.

Board members discussed the wall's placement and height, noting that it will not encroach significantly on the limited yard space of nearby apartments.
