Fire chiefs outline urgent need for new rescue stations amid call volume surge

Clay County officials are taking significant steps to address the growing demands on fire rescue services, projecting a need for substantial expansion by 2045. During a recent workshop, fire department representatives outlined a forecast of 53,000 emergency calls annually, nearly doubling the current volume of approximately 27,800 calls. This increase is attributed to population growth and changing demographics, including an aging population that requires more medical assistance.

To meet these rising demands, the fire department plans to construct eight new fire stations and upgrade existing facilities, which were primarily built as volunteer stations and lack the capacity to handle the projected call volume. Currently, the county operates 12 stations, with a partnership for a 13th station in Orange Park. However, many of these stations are not equipped to manage the increasing service load, leading to longer response times that are already nearing the National Fire Protection Association's recommended standards.

The proposed expansion includes a total investment of $152 million over the next 23 years, with the county responsible for approximately $90 million of that cost. The remaining funds are expected to come from impact fees. Fire officials emphasized the urgency of this plan, noting that without immediate action, the county risks being unable to provide adequate emergency services as new developments, such as residential complexes, continue to emerge.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of strategic station placement to ensure that emergency response units can reach all areas within a five-mile radius, a critical factor for both residential and commercial property insurance evaluations. As the county prepares for future growth, officials are committed to enhancing fire rescue capabilities to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
