School district awarded $1M EPA grant for five electric buses in historic win

The Unionville-Chadds Ford School District (UCFSD) is set to enhance its transportation system significantly after being awarded a grant of up to $1 million for five electric buses. This funding, announced during the June 2024 work session, marks a notable achievement as UCFSD becomes the first non-prioritized school district to receive such an award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The district is one of only 27 in the entire EPA Region 3, which encompasses Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

In addition to the electric bus initiative, discussions during the meeting highlighted the complexities of shared spaces within school facilities. Concerns were raised about the challenges of having different age groups, such as sixth graders and seniors, sharing cafeterias, libraries, and hallways.
