School board passes major policies for special education and students in unstable housing

The Kennett Square School Board made significant strides in supporting vulnerable students during their April 8, 2024 meeting, particularly with the adoption of a comprehensive policy addressing the needs of students experiencing homelessness and educational instability.

The board approved a complete rewrite of Policy 251, which now encompasses a broader range of students facing various challenges, including homelessness and other forms of instability. This policy aims to remove barriers to education, such as waiving fees for credit recovery, and ensures that the district can better support these students. Board member Mr. Kramer highlighted the importance of this policy, noting that it reflects a shift towards a more humane approach in addressing the needs of affected students. He emphasized the necessity of gathering accurate data on the number of students impacted, which currently exceeds 250 in the district.

In addition to Policy 251, the board also approved updates to Policy 105, which outlines curriculum guidelines for students with disabilities and English learners, and Policy 108, which now includes provisions for both print and digital textbooks. These updates are part of a broader effort to enhance educational programs and services across the district.
