Emmaus High School celebrates three years of success with therapy dogs supporting students

The East Penn School District Board Meeting on February 12, 2024, highlighted the remarkable impact of therapy dogs in schools, showcasing their role in enhancing student well-being and emotional support. Over the past three years, the district has successfully integrated three therapy dogs—Branch, Tokyo, and Mario—across various educational levels, providing comfort and assistance to students in need.

During the meeting, Mr. Mahalik presented a comprehensive overview of the program, detailing how the dogs have been utilized in multiple settings, from greeting students at the start of the day to participating in emotional support classrooms and school events. The dogs have also played a crucial role in behavioral incentives, helping students earn time with them through positive behavior. Notably, they have been involved in reentry meetings for students returning from hospitalization and have served as calming presences during crises.

Board members expressed enthusiasm for the program's success, with Mr. Jankowski suggesting a more in-depth presentation in the future to further educate the public on the benefits and logistics of the therapy dog initiative.
