Community leaders address quarry concerns and organize against toxic blasting in La Grange

Concerns over sewage management and community engagement dominated the La Grange Village Board meeting on November 13, 2023. Residents voiced frustration regarding an open sewage cap that has reportedly worsened conditions in their neighborhood. One resident, Ms. Westin, expressed her dissatisfaction, stating, “Your experiment failed. We need that closed again. We need relief.” The board acknowledged the issue but emphasized the need to wait for a comprehensive north study before making any changes.

In a positive turn, Becky Lorentz from the Community Diversity Group thanked the board for their support of the recent MOSAIC project and announced an upcoming anti-racism workshop aimed at fostering inclusivity in La Grange. She encouraged board members to participate, highlighting the importance of community involvement in creating a welcoming environment.

Trustee Youngs also brought attention to growing concerns about the McCook Heidelberg Quarry, urging residents affected by blasting and dust to connect through a dedicated Facebook group for collective action.

The meeting concluded with a call for collaboration and further study on pressing community issues, reinforcing the board's commitment to addressing resident concerns while ensuring thorough planning.
