Luma Energy leads Puerto Rico's renewable integration with new solar and wind projects

In a pivotal government meeting on February 7, discussions centered on the advancement of renewable energy resources in Puerto Rico, highlighting the crucial role of Luma in the integration of solar and wind energy projects. The meeting revealed that the Electric Power Authority is spearheading the acquisition of new renewable energy resources, while Luma is tasked with conducting essential studies for interconnection and system impact.

Luma's responsibilities include overseeing the construction of new interconnection facilities, which will be built by resource providers under Luma's supervision. Once agreements are finalized, providers will have up to 24 months to complete construction. Luma is currently coordinating studies for the second and third phases of these projects, ensuring that resource providers can offer competitive pricing in their proposals.

Additionally, Luma is facilitating the integration of three significant utility-scale projects, including the reconstruction of the Punta Lima wind farm, which was damaged by Hurricane Maria, and two solar projects totaling 150 megawatts. The company is committed to improving Puerto Rico's energy system, emphasizing the importance of practical and efficient solutions to meet the island's energy needs now and in the future.

As the meeting progressed, Luma reiterated its dedication to collaborating with all stakeholders to enhance the energy infrastructure, aiming to elevate the transmission and distribution system to the standards that Puerto Rico deserves. The discussions underscored the urgency and importance of transitioning to a more sustainable energy future for the island.
