Officer Lee Pinon honored as CLEAT Region 6 Officer of the Year for hurricane rescue heroics

The La Porte City Council convened on November 11, 2024, to address several key agenda items, including a significant recognition of local law enforcement.

The meeting commenced with the recognition of Officer Lee Pinon, who was honored as the CLEAT Region 6 Officer of the Year. This accolade was awarded for his heroic actions during Hurricane Burrow on July 8, 2024. Officer Pinon displayed remarkable bravery while responding to a life-threatening emergency on the Fred Hartman Bridge.

During the hurricane, Officer Pinon assisted in closing the northbound lanes of the bridge due to an overturned commercial vehicle. He then encountered a second vehicle that had flipped on its side, with the driver, Mr. Wilkins, in a precarious position, dangling over the edge of the bridge. Despite facing 63 mph winds and gusts up to 78 mph, Officer Pinon blocked the roadway with his vehicle and fought through dangerous conditions to rescue the trapped driver. His quick thinking and physical strength allowed him to pull Mr. Wilkins to safety, preventing what could have been a fatal accident.

In addition to the rescue, Officer Pinon ensured the safety of others by alerting personnel to evacuate the unstable bridge, leading to the closure of State Highway 146 in both directions. His actions not only saved a life but also protected many others from potential harm.

The council expressed gratitude for Officer Pinon's dedication and courage, emphasizing the importance of recognizing officers who go above and beyond in their duties. This recognition serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers take to ensure public safety, especially during emergencies.
