Puerto Rico's air travel surges to historic highs with new international routes planned

In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted significant growth in Puerto Rico's passenger traffic since 2019, marking a record year before the pandemic. The total number of passengers has surged from 9.5 million to an unprecedented level, reflecting the highest connectivity in the island's history. This growth is attributed to enhanced international and domestic flight options, with officials identifying key underserved markets that present opportunities for further expansion.

Domestically, the focus is on connecting Puerto Rico with major cities such as Los Angeles, San Antonio, Phoenix, and Las Vegas, which currently lack direct service. Internationally, San José, Costa Rica, and Mexico City are noted as primary markets without direct flights from Puerto Rico. Additionally, there are plans to establish new routes to Europe, specifically targeting London or Frankfurt as potential gateways, alongside existing connections through Madrid.

The meeting also addressed the cruise industry, which faced severe challenges during the pandemic, with passenger numbers plummeting to zero in 2021. However, recovery is underway, with projections indicating that approximately 1.4 million cruise passengers are expected to visit Puerto Rico through homeport and transit operations.
