Massachusetts tradeswomen celebrate progress as PGTI boosts female representation in construction

Governor Maura Healey and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo recently announced new initiatives aimed at increasing the representation of women and diverse groups in Massachusetts' construction industry. This effort comes as part of a broader strategy to tackle longstanding barriers that have kept underrepresented populations from accessing good union jobs and sustainable careers.

During the announcement, a co-convener of the Policy Group on Tradeswomen's Issues (PGTI) shared her personal journey from working in food service to becoming a sheet metal apprentice, highlighting the challenges women face in entering the construction field. She emphasized the importance of mentorship and support from trailblazers in the industry, noting that the number of women in the Sheet Metal Workers Union has grown from just five in 2012 to around 80 today.

The PGTI's mission focuses on an integrated supply and demand strategy, which aims to introduce women and girls to construction trades while ensuring equitable work opportunities through collaboration with contractors and project owners. Successful projects, such as the Holyoke Soldiers' Home and the Encore Casino, which set records for female participation, demonstrate the effectiveness of these best practices.

The initiatives are not only about increasing diversity but also about fostering leadership among women and people of color in the trades. The progress made is expected to benefit traditionally underserved communities, allowing more individuals to achieve financial stability and leave a legacy for future generations.

Governor Healey's commitment to these efforts reflects a growing recognition of the need for inclusivity in the workforce, aiming to create a more equitable and sustainable future for all residents of Massachusetts.
