Arkansas residents face shocking gas bill discrepancies amid estimated versus actual usage

In a recent government meeting, Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin addressed significant concerns regarding the billing practices of Summit Utilities, which have left many residents confused and frustrated. The discussion highlighted the discrepancies between estimated and actual gas usage, a situation affecting approximately 167,000 Arkansans.

One key issue raised was the confusion surrounding the amount of gas billed versus the actual usage. For instance, one resident received a bill indicating they had used 260 CCF of gas, while the actual usage was only 20 CCF. This discrepancy resulted in an initial estimated bill of $603.43, which shocked the homeowner, especially since the property was not actively using gas. After adjustments, the actual bill was reduced to around $90, excluding a deposit of $150.

Griffin emphasized that the variations in billing can stem from the number of days included in each billing cycle, which can fluctuate significantly from month to month. This inconsistency can lead to substantial differences in charges, further complicating residents' understanding of their bills.
