Harper Creek celebrates first graduates of $3.6M Grow Your Own education program

The Harper Creek Community Schools Board of Education convened on December 9, 2024, to discuss several key topics, including student achievements, upcoming events, and significant educational initiatives. The meeting highlighted the district's commitment to fostering student and staff development, particularly through the "Grow Your Own" program.

In his opening remarks, Board President Rob Ridgeway welcomed attendees and extended holiday greetings. He recognized student board member Arabella Stanley for her recent signing to Spring Arbor University to play golf, emphasizing the importance of celebrating student accomplishments. Ridgeway also announced a series of winter concerts scheduled for the week, showcasing the district's vibrant extracurricular activities.

A notable highlight of the meeting was the presentation on the "Grow Your Own" initiative, which has received a substantial grant of $3.6 million. This program aims to support staff members in pursuing higher education and teaching certifications. Tammy Chapman, a key figure in the program, reported that participation has grown significantly since its launch, with 30 staff members currently enrolled in various degree programs. The initiative not only aims to enhance the qualifications of existing staff but also addresses the broader need for qualified educators within the district.

Three staff members shared their personal experiences with the program, expressing gratitude for the support they received and the opportunities it provided. Mindy Forrest, who will graduate with a master's degree in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), highlighted the program's impact on her ability to serve students with special needs. Alex Decker and Jennifer Fry also expressed their appreciation for the program, underscoring the collaborative spirit within the district that encourages professional growth.

The meeting also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing board member Dr. Borders, who has served for six years. His departure marks a transition for the board, which will continue to focus on enhancing educational opportunities for students and staff alike.

In addition to the discussions on educational programs, the board accepted two significant donations: $500 from Douglas and Michelle Cashman for the Iron Dams robotics team, and $2,000 from WK Kelle Company for the high school band and choir. These contributions reflect community support for the district's extracurricular programs.
