During the recent Nueces County Commissioners Court meeting, public health officials provided an update on COVID-19 vaccination rates and the concerning rise in hospitalizations linked to the Delta variant. As of now, 40.44% of fully vaccinated individuals in Nueces County have received their vaccinations, slightly below the national average of 44% but above Texas's rate of 39%. Over 303,000 residents have received at least one dose, yet only 145,000 are fully vaccinated, highlighting the need for individuals to return for their second doses.
The meeting underscored a troubling spike in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations since early July, with a 200% increase in daily hospitalizations reported. Officials noted that the Fourth of July holiday likely contributed to this surge, alongside the more transmissible Delta variant, which is suspected to be circulating in the area despite not yet being confirmed through genome sequencing.
Health officials emphasized the importance of vaccination, particularly as studies indicate that two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines provide about 88% protection against the Delta variant, compared to just 33% for those who have only received one dose. They reported that among the fully vaccinated individuals, there have been 145 breakthrough cases, with 16 hospitalizations and four deaths, primarily among those with underlying health conditions.
The county continues to offer vaccinations daily at La Palmera Mall, making it accessible for residents to receive their shots. Public health officials urged the community to take advantage of these resources to help curb the spread of COVID-19 and protect vulnerable populations.
