Nueces County ramps up vaccination efforts as booster shots and pediatric doses approach approval

Nueces County is set to enhance its public health response as the local health department transitions from reliance on external support to managing COVID-19 vaccination efforts independently. During the recent Nueces County Commissioners Court meeting, officials discussed the conclusion of services from BCFS, a management organization that had been assisting with vaccination logistics during the peak of the pandemic. With vaccination rates stabilizing and the public health department gaining capacity, the need for BCFS's support has diminished.

Louise Wilmot, assistant director of public health, highlighted that the county has administered over 163,000 vaccinations, achieving a 60.5% vaccination rate among eligible residents aged 12 and older. While this figure is an accomplishment, officials aim to increase it closer to 80%. The vaccination efforts have seen a recent uptick, with over 1,400 vaccinations given in just the past week, as new booster shots become available.

Wilmot detailed the complexities surrounding the administration of booster shots, which require trained personnel to navigate varying eligibility criteria and dosages. The Pfizer and Moderna boosters have been approved for specific age groups and health conditions, while the Johnson & Johnson booster has a different timeline for administration. The introduction of a mix-and-match approach for boosters adds another layer of complexity, but the health department is prepared to assist residents in making informed decisions.

To ensure equitable access to vaccinations, the county has established multiple static and pop-up vaccination sites, particularly in underserved areas. This strategic placement aims to reach vulnerable populations who may face barriers to accessing healthcare services. The health department is also preparing for the potential approval of pediatric vaccinations for children aged 5 to 11, ensuring readiness to serve this demographic as soon as the state provides the green light.
