Lantus prepares to launch North America's first lithium extraction facility in South Arkansas

A groundbreaking demonstration plan in South Arkansas is paving the way for the first commercial lithium extraction facility in North America. The Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission meeting on December 6 highlighted the significant progress made by the project, which has already processed over 15 million gallons of brine since its launch in the second quarter of 2020.

With an investment exceeding $40 million, the demonstration plant has been crucial in developing and optimizing the technology needed for commercial operations. The facility currently employs over 30 local workers and is positioned to leverage existing infrastructure, including wells, pipelines, and power sources, to enhance lithium production.

The project, referred to as Phase 1a, will utilize brine already being processed for bromine production by LANXESS, allowing for a streamlined approach without altering current operations. This strategic partnership not only maximizes efficiency but also opens the door for future expansions, as the South unit has the potential to produce significantly more lithium than initially planned.

The meeting underscored the importance of ongoing data collection and learning from the demonstration plant's operations, as the technology is still emerging. The Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission's support for this innovative project marks a significant step toward establishing a sustainable lithium supply chain in the region, with implications for both local employment and the broader energy landscape.
