Putnam County proclaims National Runaway Prevention Month to combat youth homelessness

Veterans Day ceremonies are set to take place across Putnam County, with officials urging residents to attend and honor those who have served. During the recent Putnam County Government Legislative Meeting, leaders emphasized the importance of participation in these events, noting a decline in attendance over the years. "Please support and show up and support Veterans Day," one speaker urged, highlighting the significance of remembering veterans in even small ways.

In addition to honoring veterans, the meeting also recognized November as National Runaway Prevention Month. Jean Cunningham, Julie, and Aaron presented a proclamation aimed at raising awareness about youth homelessness and the staggering statistics surrounding it. Each year, approximately 4.2 million young people aged 13 to 25 experience some form of homelessness. The proclamation calls for community support and collaboration among families, advocacy organizations, and local services to provide safe alternatives for runaway and homeless youth.

Erin from Green Chimneys, a local organization that has been a partner in these efforts for over 29 years, shared insights on their work. "We strive to make sure every youth has a safe place," she stated, emphasizing their commitment to providing shelter and support for those in need.

The meeting concluded with a recognition of Small Business Month, further underscoring the county's commitment to community engagement and support for local initiatives. As Putnam County moves forward, the focus remains on fostering a supportive environment for both veterans and vulnerable youth.
