Lakeland Village residents push to name new library after fallen Deputy Darnell Calhoun

During the Riverside County Board of Supervisors meeting on November 5, 2024, a heartfelt plea was made for the new library in Lakeland Village to be named in honor of Deputy Sheriff Darnell Calhoun, who was tragically killed in the line of duty in January 2023. Joyce Lee, a long-time resident of the area, addressed the board, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers.

Lee highlighted that while Deputy Calhoun, along with Deputy Isaiah Cordero and Deputy Brett Harris, lost their lives serving the community, only Deputy Harris has received a significant honor—a park named after him. She expressed her concern that the recognition of Calhoun and Cordero through freeway signs does not provide a lasting place for their families to remember them.

In her emotional appeal, Lee painted a vivid picture of the impact of Calhoun's death on his family, particularly his pregnant wife and young children. She urged the board to consider the legacy of Deputy Calhoun and the importance of naming the library after him, stating, "No other individuals have sacrificed their life while protecting the citizens of Lakeland Village."

Lee's request for the library to be named the Darnell Calhoun Memorial Library was met with a call for the board to act unanimously in support of this tribute. She noted that despite previous communications, only one supervisor had reached out to express support for the naming, underscoring a perceived lack of acknowledgment for Calhoun's sacrifice.
