UN backs mediation efforts as humanitarian crisis escalates in Sudan and Egypt

During a recent Security Council meeting, Edem Wasurnu, the director of operations at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), painted a stark picture of the humanitarian landscape in Sudan. With staggering needs on the ground, she highlighted a critical funding gap for 2024, urging donors to contribute $4.2 billion to support the 21 million people in dire need within the country.

The humanitarian crisis has not only affected those within Sudan but has also led to a significant displacement crisis. Tom Fletcher, the UN's emergency relief coordinator, announced the allocation of $6 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to assist refugees fleeing the conflict into Egypt. According to the latest data from the Egyptian government, over 3 million people have sought refuge across Sudan's borders since April of last year, with approximately 1.2 million finding shelter in Egypt, making it the country hosting the largest number of Sudanese refugees.
