In a heartfelt address, a student from American Fork High School shared a personal journey of resilience and triumph during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflecting on his early battle with retinoblastoma, a rare childhood cancer, he emphasized the importance of perspective in overcoming adversity.
The speaker recounted how, at just seven months old, his mother’s intuition led to a diagnosis that changed their lives. After enduring intensive chemotherapy, he emerged from his battle with cancer, albeit with lasting visual impairments. Rather than allowing these challenges to define him, he chose to let them strengthen his character.
As the class of 2021 faced unprecedented disruptions to their senior year, including canceled events and altered school experiences, the speaker highlighted the collective resilience of his peers. Despite the limitations imposed by the pandemic, the senior class achieved remarkable milestones, including a historic state championship win for the boys swim team and a strong academic performance with 55 students maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout high school.
The speaker concluded with a powerful message: while many may remember this period for what was lost, he believes the class of 2021 will be celebrated for their accomplishments and the spirit of perseverance they demonstrated in the face of adversity.
