Community demands review of controversial reservoir design

During a recent government meeting, citizen Wayne addressed the council regarding concerns over the proposed dry wash reservoir in Ivins. He requested that the council consider adding an agenda item for either the March 7th or 21st meetings to review the costs associated with maintaining the reservoir and to evaluate its design against the 2004 environmental assessment and the city's general plan.

Wayne highlighted discrepancies between the original environmental assessment, which specified a high water level of 3,040 feet above sea level, and the current proposal that sets it at 3,044 feet. He noted that this seemingly minor difference could lead to significant issues, including the flooding and exposure of a 47-acre area, which is 127 percent larger than Ivins' existing reservoir. This area would pose maintenance challenges for the city.

He urged the council to consider various factors, such as the potential loss of open space and the financial implications of maintaining the reservoir. Wayne provided a document detailing these concerns and suggested possible solutions for the council and the Washington County Water Conservancy District to review.

The council acknowledged Wayne's request and indicated that they would make a determination on the agenda item shortly after his presentation, rather than waiting until the end of the meeting.
